10 Facebook Pages That All Geeks Should Be Following
Beyond the big brands, here's a list of Facebook Pages whose updates should be a part of every geek’s news feed.
The Discovery Channel has its own Facebook Page for news and videos, and boy, if you thought Discovery’s Testtube network had cool stuff, you haven’t seen anything yet. This Page is one of the few media publications to really embrace Facebook’s full potential.
While it serves as a link to Discovery’s main news website, the Page
also comes out with interesting factoids, awesome images, and full
videos for you to watch without ever leaving Facebook. Here’s a tip:
Head to the Discovery News Videos page if you have some time to spare.
IFL Science
With almost 23.5 million followers, I F***ing Love Science (IFLS) is
one of the most-followed geek pages on Facebook.
Founded by British blogger Elise Andrew, the page’s entire purpose is
to round up cool scientific facts and discoveries from across the
planet and present them in Facebook-friendly formats. A short caption
accompanies each link, whose headline and synopsis perfectly sums up
everything you need to know. You can click to find out more, of course.
And more importantly, IFLS uploads and shares a lot of cool videos from
the world of science and technology.
George Takei
Famous for playing Mr. Sulu on Star Trek, actor George Takei has become an icon on the Internet. Takei’s Take on YouTube was a must-watch
for anyone who loves geek pop culture. While that hasn’t seen an update
in over a year, Takei is still active on Facebook, talking about
everything from Airbnb problems to feel-good stories around the web.
Not everything Takei talks about is necessarily for geeks, but it’s a
staple of Internet culture nonetheless. In fact, he is now influential
enough online that he often shapes the conversation on the Internet.
Interesting Engineering
If it involves cool engineering of any sorts, it’ll be on the
Interesting Engineering Facebook page. The focus isn’t on geek culture
at large as much as on inventions, explanations, and trends in the world
of engineering. And because of this focus, the page has a great core
community of similar-minded users who are able to add to the shared post
and make it a lively conversation.
Interesting Engineering is also one of the few pages to use embedded GIFs in Facebook to highlight the best part of a video or an infographic. Of course, you’ll get plenty of videos and infographics too.
Did You Know
Facebook has several “Did You Know” pages that regularly post
interesting facts and observations. The granddaddy of them all is the
one run by the DidYouKnowBlog.
Why? Because unlike most of its competitors, DYK take the trouble of
citing sources so you can find out more about the fact. Although they
get it wrong sometimes, it still makes a big difference in credibility.
Most of the information isn’t original. DYK will make meme-like
images, posters, or repost links and videos from other sources. But its
emphasis is on drawing out the most interesting factoid in the post
itself, while letting you click to find out more.
Facecrooks
Since Facebook is a huge part of the Internet, it’s no surprise that scammers aren’t far behind. You need to be able to spot a Facebook scam before it’s too late, and Facecrooks is one of the best resources to do that.
The self-styled social media watchdog does its best to stay abreast
of all the security and privacy implications of using Facebook, laws
regarding it, and any scams and attacks that are currently circulating.
Since new scams come up all the time, following this page might just
save you from being a victim.
Nerd Approved
From the best geeky movies to the must-watch geeky TV shows,
it’s a good time to be a nerd in the world of entertainment. To get
your fill of the latest news and happenings for things that matter to
geeks, Nerd Approved is the Facebook page to follow.
The cool part is that Nerd Approved is more than just entertainment
news. It trawls the web for other artefacts that would matter to geeks,
like YouTube mash-ups or awesome action figures and toys. There’s also a
pretty decent community of geeks in this page, so you could drop in the
comments and usually find someone to talk to about whatever you want.
Cosplay Heaven
Cosplay is a big part of the geek lifestyle, with great Tumblrs dedicated to cosplay.
On Facebook, Cosplay Heaven has carved a niche of around 500,000 people
interested in dressing up and acting as one of their favorite fictional
characters.
The owner of the page herself does a lot of cosplay and posts photos,
but she also invites readers and others to send in their snaps. Plus,
the adults-only content is restricted to the Twitter page, while the
Facebook page is kept a bit more family-friendly.
Milky Way Scientists
At its best, the purpose of science in space exploration is simple:
discovery and amazement. Milky Way Scientists delivers both of these in
spades, from photographs of the cosmos taken on still nights on earth,
to focussing on the science behind the beauty of nature around us.
By delivering all of this in the form of photos, Milky Way Scientists
is like a daily source of inspiration and wonder. Once in a while, a
photo will come with a longer caption containing a quote or an
explanation, which takes it to a new level of entertainment. There are
some great websites for space and astronomy fans, but Milky Way Scientists will bring the best of that to your news food every day.
One Million Gamers
With over 700,000 subscribers, One Million Gamers is well on its way
to meeting its target. The page isn’t really bothered about gaming news
or helpful tips or any such information. The focus here is to have fun,
with hilarious gaming memes, GIFs, videos, and more.
Now really, you need to know your video games (and the typical gamer)
if you want to enjoy yourself on this community page. From Sonic the Hedgehog to Uncharted’s Drake, the constant updates will keep you entertained… if you know what they’re talking about!
